“The Psychiatrist’s office is an intimate place with a mystique of its own. Having practiced clinical social work for 35 years, I am familiar with the field both as a clinician and patient. Drawing on these perspectives, I explore these spaces and their meaning with my camera. The office, as a site for many dramas, functions as an empty stage waiting for its players. Behind closed doors I release the shutter, providing visual access to a world veiled in privacy.” – Jane Fulton Alt, The Treatment Room Exhibition, The Artist Project, Artropolis, April 24-28, 2008
I was born in Chicago in 1951 and attended the University of Michigan (BA, 1973) and the University of Chicago (MA, 1975). I have exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. I have received numerous awards and my work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston; New Orleans Museum of Art; Beinecke Library at Yale University; University of Illinois Comer Archive; Centro Fotografico Alvarez Bravo in Oaxaca, Mexico; Center for Photography at Woodstock; Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center; De Paul University Art Museum; Wilmette Public Library; and the Dancing Bear collection of William Hunt. I am the recipient of the 2007 Illinois Arts Council Fellowship Award and the 2007 and 2008 Ragdale Foundation Fellowship. In addition to photography, I am a licensed clinical social worker, with a practice of over 30 years.
